Our client is an MIT-associated technology startup software-only medical data company that delivers AI toolkits, to provide real time actionable insights to providers. They are headquartered in Boston MA and work with over 40 medical centers and hospitals to develop physician centric models of care.
Our client developed a tool that uses AI to detect abnormalities in patient diagnostic imaging. Through machine learning, the tool begins to recognize such abnormalities, but in order to accomplish this it must be fed millions of images via a cloud-based file share network. These images are embedded with patient identification information. To remain in compliance with privacy regulations, patient and other personal medical information must be removed. Furthermore, the images that are received come from many sources. The embedded patient data is not always in the same location or consistent within the image. MResult was tasked to design a secure solution for AI engine training without breaching any regulations that can detect patient data regardless of location on image.
MResult created a secure patient obfuscation application that included RBAC (Role Based Access Control) that ensured appropriate user level access to view the files. This sophisticated application identifies patient data and then automatically applies a pixel overlay on the information. The overlay obscures the confidential patient information so that the diagnostic images can be interpreted by the tool without breaching any privacy regulations. Additionally, the application is hosted on a VPC (virtual private cloud) with multi-factor authentication for an additional layer of security. This application was built in AWS cloud with AI image processing features.
This application saved our client the exuberant cost and time of creating multiple storage data bases. Automating the patient obfuscation process allowed the tool to ramp up it’s speed to absorb millions of images by 400%. Our client was able to bring their product to market in a matter of months rather than years while adhering to all privacy regulations.
